Hi again Scott--just to let you know, your post was here from earlier today, I just missed seeing it.
It is the very white color of this material, plus the very porous, leafy/tubular nature, that makes me think it is a calcareous deposit, not slag (or lava). Try the acid!

of an unusual piece of "lava" which may actually be some sort of industrial
slag on my website. We were puzzling over what it could be, and she advised
that she hadn't seen any lava like this from any of the Hawaiian islands. I
