If I had an inkling of that when I was a kid I'd have pestered my parents to
take me there until they either gave in or told me to stop asking forever. I
had a bunch of self collected and cheap minerals. I did get them to cave in
for a Sterling Hill visit and I didn't know that they had a night dig which
I got to spend a couple hours and remember to this day. I don't know how
they got a light maybe they rented them in the 70s. But they still didn't
see the point. I had a blast and still have a few pieces of it.

LINCOLNTON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The rockhounds have descended on Graves
Mountain, a mecca for mineral hunters.
There’s a free event there twice a year – the last weekend in April and the
first weekend in October – at the unique geological formation.
The treasures attract visitors from as far away as China and Hawaii.
On Friday, cars lined the road leading into the site, a former mine for
rutile, a substance used in polishing diamonds.
People are coming from near and far to look for gems in Lincoln County.
The “spring dig” is happening over at Graves Mountain and these rocks are
rare and expensive.
