Don't quote me on this but I think it's the relationship between surface
area and mass. They "breathe" through their exoskeleton and air can only be
adsorbed at a fixed rate. So more O2 in the air = more O2 transferred into
the body tissues, which in turn supports a larger mass.

O2 increased to 35% in the Carboniferous which may explain the large size.
As I understand it arthropods size is limited by O2 transfer since they do
not have a lungs-heart system.
