[Rockhounds] Iridium in undersea crater confirms asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that was caused by a Maunder sunspot
minimum.
The sun 's core has a different rotation speed than its outer layers. That
causes magnetic field lines to get twisted and entangled. Those magnetic
fields seriously stir up the sun and make it more active. 
Where the magnetic field lines breach the surface  of the sun, you get
sunspots.
More sunspots = more active sun = more energy output.
Just like a broken clock show the right time twice a day, the magnetic
fields of the sun sometimes synchronize for a little time... Then there are
no sunspots, the sun is calm, and temperatures drop. Sometimes it takes the
sun more time to get back to the normal sunspot cycle. That could mean a
Maunder minimum.

There is still debate going on if the Little Ice Age was caused by such a
minimum... The jury 's still out...

Wasn't the post-Medieval Little Ice Age partially attributed to volcanic
activity?

Fluorine will cause painful and life threatening skeletal growths. There
were some early colonies in America where nearly ALL settlers died due to a
massive volcanic eruption in... wait for it... Iceland. The Laki volcano
erupted causing on of the severest winters on the northern hemisphere. In
spring an summer 1783-84 nearly 25.000 people died in Great Britain alone.
The following faming is believed to have led to the FrenchRevolution.

In Indonesia (former Dutch East Indies). Mount Tambora exploded and filled
the atmosphere with an aerosol of sulfuric acid, which blocks the heat of
the sun. That year, 1815, was called 'the year without summer'. 

Then there are, family of sulfur, selenium and tellurium expelled during
volcanic eruptions. These can make egg shells harder so that hatchlings
can't get out.

I DO see how flood basalts can cause mass extinctions. Especially since
those last for thousands of years and certainly dwarf even eruptions like
Tambora, Krakatau, Yellowstone, etc... 
The Deccan traps in India where formed about 66.250.000cyears ago, at the
end of the cretaceous era. Which is pretty close to the extinction of the
dinosaurs. 1.5 km² was covered with lava in an eruption that lasted 30.000
years. Can't have been good for the climate.

Don't see how the flood basalts in Washington (my home area - Tri Cities)
could have contributed much to a mass extinction event and surely not more
than a meteorite/comet impact or even explosive, caldera-like eruptions.
The flood basalts weren't very explosive events, they are basaltic (similar
to Hawaii) by definition.  Not very viscous and free-flowing.  So, they
would definitely affect the nearby area and cause a temperature increase in
the immediate region, but they most likely wouldn't have a "nuclear winter"
or large-scale global effect of a meteorite impact.  That time period was
very active for volcanoes, but flood basalts are a bit different phenomena.

both events are not so far apart on the geological timescale.
Most likely both events conspired to the demise of the dinosaurs.
