[Rockhounds] AD- Downsizing

Probably not what you're looking to do but our club has had really good
results liquidating colelctions/estates by setting up a weekend sale at an
easy to get to public space and advertising heavily among all the local
clubs, Craigslist Facebook etc. The last collection I was involved in we
kept dropping the prices until most of the collection was gone. We had a
couple tables crammed with minerals. I had pulled some nice specimens out
for our oral action and as I had one up for bids I noticed that one guy way
in the back, who wouldn't quit on one until he won, looked familiar. After
he won it he came up to the table in his wheelchair and I recognized him. It
was his collection (he went into assisted living), and he wanted it back.
His daughter gave me a "whatcha gonna do" look, she knew he had snuck away
but didn't know where to :)

Hi Gang, I personally have been very interested in the comments about
finding a way to smartly find a home for one's mineral collection. I have
already donated geology books to a local geology dept. I'm Trying to gather
a lists of dealers interested in low - medium - and high end specimens. I
know I will donated some to my club for their silent auction. I have a bunch
of strange to weird items for those interested in the very different. I
have quite a few rather good feldspar specimens, and being a light weight
species collector, there are a few good ones in this department. So I
believe I'm looking to make a lists of potential dealers. It would be nice
to have some help with this!

Larry,
I'm with you. I am doing the same thing. It is somewhat painful but as I
sell or give away my pieces, I have some fond memories and stories to pass
along, and assuming I finish divesting of my collection before I die, I'll
know that everything went to someone who wanted it and it won't all get
thrown out by whoever manages my estate.
Best,
Don
