The recent thread about volcanoes and earthquakes reminded me about the
Berkeley program that is devoted to research which use your PC as a "shared
computing power" device to aid in the massive data studies they do,
including earthquakes and other areas.

You may also choose to participate in a number of other studies which
include "outer space' intelligence programs that require the computer power
only available with the help of many shared devices. Their system
automatically calls upon your PC to participate in a time and manner that is
non-competitive with your personal needs.

For info..see: SETI at Home

A second recommendation: Simon Winchester, the author of "Krakatoa", (highly
recommended) and other research novels, has written an account of the San
Francisco earthquake (2005), "A Crack in The Edge of the World", which is an
historical and scientific account of that (and other earthquakes of 1906),
in an interesting readable narrative.
