Onderwerp: [Rockhounds] Very rare galena (NOT an ad!)
I was at a friend's house this summer , and he mentioned that he had some
Missouri galena he could sell to me.
He pointed to a spot at the rear of his yard and told me it had been dumped
there from a trailer a few years ago.
I went over, but could not find any, then asked him again where it had been
dumped. He walked me over to a grassy spot, and said "dig here".
I did and found a load of nice galena. Evidently the very heavy weight of
the lead ore caused the pieces to migrate down into the soil, and the grass
grew over them, hiding it all.
I dug out quite a lot of nice, cubic crystal pieces, which I took home and
cleaned up to their original metallic luster.
These pieces sold quite well at our Fall shows, especially when I described
them (with a grin) as quite rare; "The only galena specimens in history
where the same piece had been mined in two different places, once in
Missouri and once again in Connecticut".
Sometimes you have to reach for a little humor, to spice up the day!!
