What Axel said... we were up on top earlier this week (gasp-gasp-gasp Who
took all the air???) and the signs make it very clear that this is sacred
ground. The astronomers and staff do try hard to respect that. "No new
science" has NOTHING to do with it. It's purely a religious issue...and one
that I understand very well living three blocks from Native American burial
grounds in Saint Paul ("Mounds Park" kind of says it all.). I'm going to be
involved in enhanced preservation for them when I get home.

Not necessarily "no new science"...
Mauna Kea is "holy ground" for the native Hawaiians. They impose some strict
rules if anyone wants to build on their holy spots.

I just read an article about the proposed new telescope on Mauna Kea, sounds
like a tough situation. Looks like the state approved the construction
permit with conditions that they remove 3 other telescopes and won't be
allowed to build any more. Is that right? "No more telescopes" sounds an
awful lot like "no new science" to me.
