For my research many years ago including interview with the Westpoint historian the source of ore came from at least 2 magnetite mines in the Bear Mountain area. One of the adits is right along side of a state route beside a state park lake at the edge of the Taconic(?) Range aka to the north off one of the SR 9 roads. I'd have to pull out a map to be more Speciffic. BTW there was also suposidlt a "tin" mine in Garrison, NY across from Westpoint but the adit is back filled and i couldn't locate any ore samples.Who knows how accurate these "historical" tradition's may be without, verifying through early geological reports.

The story I always heard was that the iron used for the chain across the
Hudson came from a mine in Ringwood, NJ. There are links from that chain at
Ringwood Manor in New Jersey (and also at West Point (USMA).
