It's interesting to read all these and know that my son has a part in helping run the programs.  He works at Cray Research here in the Twin Cities.  The three biggest customers are the military (don't ask...really...just don't ask), the oil companies (seismic modelling), and weather organizations.  That the models can predict where a storm is going to go a week out and get it within 100 miles is pretty remarkable.  Florida isn't that wide, and having Irma head up the west instead of east coast isn't that much of an error in the program.  Just imagine doing all of that with slide rules.
