You have a point, Doug, I agree with that.
The problem with climate is not slow change. We can manage that. The problem is not rapid change either. There will be refugees as seawater rises and people are driven away from the equator. But we can manage that.
The problem is "tipping points".
It's like with an airplane taking off. Once the pilots have used up a certain amount of runway and are going at a certain speed, they are committed to fly. The same goes for climatic change.
Ocean can take up a lot of heat but how much?
A good example would be Chicxulub.
It wasn't the impact itself that killed the dinos. Nor was it the hot sky that was caused by the immensely hot debris that covered the globe for thousands of miles in either direction.
According to latest research it was incredible bad luck that a very thick layer of gypsum (here we go: the actual first mineral) lay at the point of impact. Millions of tons of gypsum was evaporated in an instant, introducing vast amounts of sulfate in the stratosphere.
Sulfate is a champion in absorbing energy from the sun. It plunged the planet in a cold spell that probably lasted a few decades. Practically all plant life halted, so no food for planteaters, which is bad news for carnivores too.
So temperature and duration of the micro-ice age represent tipping point parameters.
Without the gypsum, dinosaurs may have recovered from the impact.
I don't know what the boundaries are with which we need to reckon. Nobody really knows, I guess... But it is of paramount importance that we realize that there ARE such boundaries from where there is no returning if they are crossed.
I believe that this is the real issue. Movies like "Interstellar" or "The day after Tomorrow", "Deep Impact", etc., always have us saved at the very last moment.
The first crew that flies to Mars will perish. Yes, I've seen "The Martian"... good movie but a load of male bovine excrement (just a nice way to avoid saying BS).
A meteor may strike, or Betelgeuse of Eta-Carinae may go supernova... that could have a serious impact on the cost of your life insurance too. But at least we wouldn't have done it ourselves 😉

I agree with your point, but I have a counter-point.
What if we all agree that there is a problem, but cannot agree how to solve it? What if we say that we cannot afford to wait and must do what looks like the best alternative now in order to prevent an imminent problem? And what if that best alternative actually sucks and causes bigger problems?
My example for all this is controversial and relates to the very poorly named "nutrition science". In the 60’s and 70’s they felt that heart disease was a disaster in the making and there was some evidence implying that some dietary changes might help reduce that disaster. They literally said that we could not afford to wait to decide what should be done, but should make a change now. They went with low fat diets and vilified saturated fat and cholesterol etc. Were they right with respect to heart disease? Did we try to fix one problem and accidentally create a bigger problem? I have an opinion, but I certainly don’t have an answer. But the incidence of obesity and diabetes and cancer and hypertension have all increased, some to epidemic proportions. Coincidence???? The human body is complicated. The planet earth is even more complicated….
My point is that while I definitely agree that there is global warming and we should do something about it (and I have three hybrids in my garage and I also wonder about thorium reactors), I don’t think we should do anything really drastic to try to fix the problem without a lot of study and experimentation to make sure we don’t screw things up worse in the process.
