Kilauea volcano has started erupting again after a months-long pause in
activity, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It’s in an area that last
erupted a half-century ago.

The new eruption began approximately 12:30 a.m. Monday.

According to USGS, the eruption is about a mile south of Kilauea’s summit
caldera and north of the Koae fault system and Hilina Pali Road, within
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The last time it erupted in this region was in December 1974. It lasted
only six hours.

Experts said there’s no telling when this new eruption will end.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised the Volcano Alert Level for
ground-based hazards from a “watch” to a “warning.” The aviation color code
was also raised from “orange” to “red.”

“Glow is visible in webcam imagery, indicating that lava is currently
erupting from fissures,” USGS said.

Scientists said activity is restricted within the south caldera and it is
not a threat to the public.
