[Rockhounds] Colossal Cache of Lithium Found in US May Be World's Largest

I have been peripherally involved in the McDermitt Caldera lithium uproar
for a year or so. Given the compendium of the thousands of test cores
drilled from the central and southern parts of the caldera, any estimate of
the rare earths' potential is erratic and unreliable. The only "concrete"
numbers are within the Thacker Pass mine's proposed excavation area and good
sized area surrounding it. They are gearing up for construction right now
(construction starts this week is not "sticking a shovel in the ground").
Unless the price of lithium shoots through the roof (and its a near
guarantee that once Thacker starts pumping out significant quantities the
price will start to drop), the much larger mid-and mid-northern areas have
shown marginally profitable or money losing concentrations. Most of this
"information" is based on hyperbole from 3 speculators who are trying to
pump up the potential so they can sell off their hundreds of claims to
Thacker. Not only that but removing low concentration clays and transporting
them to Thacker Pass is a significant investment that may never pay off.
Also the state of Oregon mine permitting process is tough to get through,
the Grassy Mountain gold mine has been in permitting for 7 years and is
right now getting state approval. We don't have the support of high level
state or fed level politicians like NV does. Anyway 20 to 40 million tons is
a nonsense number if it can't be extracted profitably.
