Isn't it amazing the way the meteor came down and JUST MISSED hitting the
visitor's center!

Fun read, thanks.  Brings back memories from decades ago when I first
visited the crater and was able to hike around the rim, clockwise I think.
It plays games with your mind because there's continuously this big open pit
to one side of you that seems to rotate as you "stand still".

Years later I paid the entry fee again, and was able to circle the rim
again, but in the other direction.  It took about 1.5 hours again.

And years after that, passing through the area, I wanted to hike the rim
once more.  I talked with them at length, and the answer was a firm "NO"...
"for insurance reasons."  You can't pay more, you can't sign a waiver, you
just can't do that any more!  Sad.

Oh well, on my first outing around the rim I picked up a small chunk of
weathered sandstone that I labeled, put visibly on a shelf, and still enjoy
seeing.  Even realizing full well that the rim has weathered down something
like 50' (if I recall right) from when the crater first formed.  So this
blob was violently involved, but probably not exposed at the time.
