I happened across this short film on Youtube about lead mining in Missouri this afternoon,, and thought it would probably interest many folks on this list.

They were proud of the huge piles of chat on the landscape, and of the myriad uses of lead in "modern" society. The size of the underground chambers ( 200 feet tall! )was astonishing to this guy who sees continuous miners built for 24" low coal all the time. The amount of hand work, the nearly universal absence of respirators, all amazing today.
