The Grand Rapids Public Museum announced today the finding of a mastodon
skeleton.

A mastodon is a mammal that is now extinct, which resembled a large
elephant with fur and long curved tusks.

“Kent County road crews uncovered a mastodon today – which will eventually
end up at the GRPM! Pictured here: Dr. Cory Redman, the Museum’s science
curator, leads a crew of museum staff, volunteers, and experts from the
University of Michigan. Check back for more info as the process continues,”
The museum posted today on Facebook.

Local TV Station Wood TV8 reports that the bones were found when road crews
were excavating to do culvert repair along 22 Mile Road and found a
three-foot-long femur. The station interviewed an expert who shared more
details, and confirmed that once the bones are studied by the University of
Michigan, they will be turned over to the museum for display.
