Thanks to everyone who's been posting survival & preparation advice.  Here's one thing I didn't know that is potentially life-saving:
"Call 911 on your cell phone, even if you don’t have service. By law, any tower that you can connect with will transmit that call."

I recently bought a Garmin In-Reach Mini that I will carry with me now.  It is a satellite messenger so it only does texts, but it can always (maybe after a short wait) get a signal if it can see the sky.
