Larry: As I remember, I think the primary asbestos mineral was Crocidolite, but the zones of collector mineralization occurred in intrusive dikes, which could be heavily mineralized with collectibles. You might have to do some research on that, as it was many years ago ( remember those times???) that I had a better memory on such !!

> I have been fortunate to have visited Asbestos and the Jeffery Mine several times when the quarry was actively mining. A couple of incidents will always be favorite memories.....
> Approaching the town, and the quarry itself, there were literally miles of tailings extending along the roads, At that time, there was no awareness of the dangers of asbestos, and the Canadian government seemed powerless to be concerned about it. Those are likely gone now, but it is worrisome to think of living, playing, and working near those man-made mountains at that time!
> For some years, the mine would let a Canadian club go in once a year, down into the pit, and look for the seams which contained the crystals. Great collecting! Maybe a Canadian member can tell us a tale or two??
> I met the mine geologist there,(can't recall his name now) who took me to his home to see his personal collection. As you might imagine, it was astounding!! A literal museum of crystals and colors. I hope it either has or will go to some Canadian museum.
> This same geologist arranged to have a truckload of material dumped just for us in the "collectors site". It was forbidden for collectors to go down into the hole, so the company frequently would dump a truckload nearby. We had a ball sorting out the many specimens there. A rockhound's dream! On a later trip, a friend and I visited one of the miner's homes, and bought crystals from him. $2 for a single terminated vesuvianite! I was poor then, (1980's)and could only spend about $20. Bittersweet memories!!
> Another memory. At one time in this mine's history, the hole, which was huge, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, extended too far towards the miner's village, and the company decided to move all of the houses farther away from the edge, so that the pit could continue to expand.
> For years after my visits, I took my extras to the "Rock Swap" at Gilsum, NH, and traded them, No regrets, I got good specs. in return. But it does make me think how casually I treated them at that time. Just a few left in my own collection now. They bring back good memories just to hold them these days!
> Mineralogical Record did a piece on the mine. Maybe Vol.29, No.5 "Quebec"? Some fantastic photos, as I recall.
> Another benefit of this ever-rewarding hobby we share!! Only a mineral collector can share these memories and be thankful for the pleasures, the friends, and the comfort of this great passion!
> Thanks for letting me share..............
