[Rockhounds] Radioactive Minerals

The uranium deposits in this region were almost entirely for secondary uranium minerals, primarily autunite. Primary minerals, such as uraninite were pretty well oxidized in most areas. In the Turtle Lake area, there was some uraninite, but mostly it was fine grained. The Turtle Lake area is 25-30 miles from the Mount Spokane uranium area and the mineralogy is a bit different there.

In the Mount Spokane area, the ore was autunite/meta-autunite. It is very likely that uraninite was the original primary mineral, but long ago oxidized and the uranium redeposited as the autunite.
