[Rockhounds] This World Map Is Weird — And Weirdly Accurate

" You want a Mercator? You're living a lie." is precious. As a GIS geek I'm
relieved that I don't have to map very large areas to represent
graphically(the largest maps I usually make cover about 5 states). While
it's been part of my consulting services for decades, for the last 5 years
or so demand has fallen through the floor. The focus has shifted from
graphics to pure data products. So generating maps that look more or less as
they should is much less relevant that it once was. Except for Nat Geo, I
almost always like their maps.
Not to be self-promotional (well maybe a little) this is a custom projection
made for the entire Pacific northwest. It even does a decent job when I
include CA. http://orerockon.com/DVD%20screen%20shot%205.jpg
IMO raw lat/lon is among the worst, I receive a lot of GIS files that were
made to present visual representations of a large area. They can look really
stupid, like someone used a rolling pin on them :D
