Thanks for that idea. I did have an old bucket of weak muriatic acid
outside, so I checked the concentration with a piece of calcite to make
sure it wasn't neutral, and there was a weak reaction - I did see some
fizzing on the surface. Then I checked a piece of the unidentified slag
type material in question, and I couldn't see any visible reaction. I left
the slag in the acid so I will see if there's any breakdown over time, but
I'm going to tentatively say that it's not calcareous.
