That was interesting, Kitty, thanks for sharing it with us!  I'd never heard of "Lahaina Noon" before.
The link to the Museum's astronomy resources didn't seem to take me there on my Android phone (mostly showed "We are lost", Keep in touch", and what's the big number 404 stand for?, but it did go there on my laptop, though I still didn't find Lahaina Noon there, but Wikipedia gave me a good description of it.  I see that the term was just selected by the Museum, in the 1990s.  But I'd never really thought, about how there are just two dates when the sun would be exactly there, overhead, at noon.  And therefore I guess--just one date (on the solstice) if you are exactly on the Triopic of Cancer or Capricorn, and exactly on the equator, the two dates would be the spring and fall equinoxes.
Kitty, I guess you don't post as often as perhaps you once did, and for me, I'm pretty quiet on Rockhounds myself, I don't post very often.  I think I'm commented before--for me at least, I think posting more often on facebook has partly taken the place of posting on Rockhounds.
So since I'm writing--we in Denver had our first "mineral" event taking place, this past weekend, Dave Bunk Minerals + Gloria Staebler's "Lithos" book etc. shop, + Dan's (Unruh) Used Rock held a parking-lot outdoor + also their shop indoors, Spring Mineral Sale.  The outdoor tables were spaced ("one person per table"), and only a few at a time allowed inside; masks and distancing all requried.  It went well, a chance to visit with some folks (and look at the rocks & minerals), though when I stopped there (end of the afternoon) there were only a couple of visitors there, and I doubt that they made any bundle of money over the weekend, but, it was a start.  Several of our mineral shows here in Colorado that would have taken place in April, May, or June (and all the several clubs' silent auctions), were all been cancelled, and I guess we're still waiting to hear what will be the word about the outdoor shows, including the "Contin-Tail" in Buena Vista in August.
The Rocky Mountain Federation has been planning to hold, but is supposed to be making a final go or no go decision right about now, its Federation Show June 16-18 in Big Piney, Wyoming.  Big Piney, pop. 552, is about as far out in the boonies as one can get! (southwest Wyoming, west of Lander, north of Rock Springs).  And, we're still all wondering if the Denver Show will take place as planned in September, though plans are tentatively going ahead for me.
Cheers to all, stay healthy and in good spirits,
Pete Modreski

Subject: [Rockhounds] Lahaina Noon

I don't know how this relates to rocks, but It may to interest
scientific minds.  Monday the 18th is  Lahaina Noon in Hilo.  For those
interested look it up on the web or check out the links below.

According to the Bishop Museum
<https://www.bishopmuseum.org/astronomy-resources/>, this phenomenon
only occurs in the tropics; the Sun is never directly overhead in any
other part of the planet.

Maybe rocks cast no shadow on Lahaina Noon that makes it relevant.

Aloha, Kitty
