I barely missed seeing the 1996 eruption by a few days, I flew by it on my to Sumatra for work. By the time I flew back it was over but you could tell the lava was fresh, it was steaming pretty good. Friends who were still in Jakarta said it was one of the better ones they'd seen on TV :)
