[Rockhounds] Why did White Island (Whakaari) Volcano, New Zealand, erupt as it did?

Because it's on the ring of fire, and New Zealand is extremely 
geologically unstable.   It doesn't need more reasons than that.

The volcano that blew had been giving out warning of being likely to 
erupt for weeks or months.  There is no excuse for tourists having been 
on that island.  Family of one person who died say there is no way he'd 
been told of the danger or he'd not have been there, for whatever that's 
worth.   Government should just have made the island off limits; prime 
minister crying at this point is just crocodile tears.

In my mind.

I'm gratified to see that I seem to be preaching to the choir.
