[Rockhounds] Gold Strike in West Australia

After seeing these really nice specimens and thinking of all the specimens I have seen in museums, I am puzzled. Are the gold crystals I see in museums found in dirt or clay or even air, or are they in quartz or calcite and the surrounding rock is then chemically removed?
