The article stated:

"Next month Sotheby's in New York will auction off some of the only
moon rocks that can be legally owned by private individuals."

This is not correct. Lunar meteorites, which are also pieces of the
Moon are legal to buy and sell freely. They are still pricey Depending
on the quality and type, they are about 800 dollars a gram to about
650 dollars a gram on sale. :-(
