I have no need for doorstops, but I have collected minerals & fossils for my rock garden for most of my life. Favorites include a boulder with schorl, garnets and muscovite (in bands) in albite from Mt. Mica, Maine; a 150 lb fluorite on barite from Danville, KY; several boulders of sphalerite (massive and vugs), and a yellow / purple fluorite boulder (originally two intergrown 9" cubes) from the Annabel Lee mine near Cave in Rock, IL. And don't get me started on the fossils!
Love yard rocks! They go great with everything from azaleas to zinnias, adding color in my garden over the winter.

From "doorstops" to the Hope diamond, there is room for all kinds of interests and varieties of facets in this hobby.....I think no other offers so many options for enjoyment, education, friendships and vocation!!
You have it right, Terri...it's the ride that matters....enjoy!!

My father started working at the customs in what was 'Belgian Congo'.
He was known by his collegues as a mineral collector.
Living in Matadi (the main inland 'sea port' of Congo in 1952, he once received a small but heavy parcel from his collegue in Bujumbura (Rwanda).
Inside was a 3.5 kg heavy cassiterite xl from a mine called Rwinkavu in Rwanda.
I had been used for many years as a door stop in the customs office until that collegue realise the importance of the specimen.
It is still in my collection now.

My grandsons have spread most of my many years collection all over my now drought resistant yard. Rutilated quartz lies in a Cactus bed. Slabs help define Water retaining berms, and in front of the house holding potted plants are two large “rocks”, one of which I know to be Jade.
There is Petrified wood amongst my Roses. I just found a box of fire agates they missed. One thing I can say for sure, I enjoyed every collecting Field Trip, I loved every Rock and Mineral Club show where I won some Silent Auctions, and yes all I purchased at Quartzsite.
After I transition, my son and then perhaps these very grandsons will enjoy the sun reflections where least expected. Who knows after that. From the 70’s through today, I enjoyed the ride, friendships, etc.
Hugs
Terrie
