[Rockhounds] This Is Why It’s Illegal to Collect Rainwater in Some States

In Hawaii many households have rain catchment tanks as their only source
of household water.  We built our own collection tank in 1981 out of an
above ground swimming pool, placed on a hill in our back yard so that we
got gravity flow to our house.  Where we live now (since 1991) our whole
neighborhood gets its water from a rain collection tank which is managed
by the city.  Some of our newer neighbors have private collection tanks
because their properties aren't on the city system.

Aloha, Kitty

No one*likes* rainwater. That’s why umbrellas and raincoats exist, and why
most folks take extensive measures to stay inside when it’s coming down
outside. However, if you, for whatever reason, wanted not only to
experience the rain but keep some for yourself, you might find yourself on
the wrong side of the law. That’s because, weirdly, collecting rainwater is
actually illegal in some states.
