I think we were at the same place in 93 or 94. There were also people actually walking on the crust at the point where it was dripping into the ocean at Puu Loa(?) The "CAUTION" tape apparently meant nothing to them. You could see it just fine from the road if you held your breath when the sulfur cloud changed directions:)

I tried to verify this. It is true that the road to the road that was covered in lava is closed, but I don’t think it is closed because it is covered in lava. The fissures are further to the east. Moreover, there is some confusion because there is *another* road to the road that was covered by lava. However, it is closed too, but not because it is covered in lava either…

This next one shows lava sitting on the road (which road?). I visited back in 1993, probably back when the road that was covered in lava was being covered in lava. Back then you could walk right up to it and melt your shoes if you so desired. Probably not a real smart move, but it was pretty cool (but hot ;-)
