[Rockhounds] Hawaii eruptions and earthquakes

Hi Doug,

As I recall it, if you drive from Volcano Park to the Road That Is Covered By Lava you need to take the "Chain of Craters Road".
Looking at some news feed, I thought it was part of that road that is now covered in lava.... But it's also possible that it's somewhere near the steam vents?
And then it may also be somewhere completely different due to the fact that I'm remembering this slightly wrong.
Roads being closed makes sense... forest can be ignited by the lava. We had one forest fire there in 2013.

Axel

Axel,

I tried to verify this. It is true that the road to the road that was covered in lava is closed, but I don’t think it is closed because it is covered in lava. The fissures are further to the east. Moreover, there is some confusion because there is *another* road to the road that was covered by lava. However, it is closed too, but not because it is covered in lava either…

This aerial view is impressive!

This next one shows lava sitting on the road (which road?). I visited back in 1993, probably back when the road that was covered in lava was being covered in lava. Back then you could walk right up to it and melt your shoes if you so desired. Probably not a real smart move, but it was pretty cool (but hot ;-)
