Hi List,
Last month I received the following email from George Polman. It wasn't
until today that I realized the Rockhounds List might like to read it,
and watch the TV show this Thursday on CBS.
Aloha, Kitty
PS: George Polman is a long-term friend; Bill & I have visited him in
Phoenix, and he and Deb have visited us here in Hilo. We've bought
fluorescent minerals and UV lamps from him and always found him to be
reliable and informative, but we have no financial connection with his
business.
Dear Fluorescent Mineral Collectors:
About a month ago, I was contacted by the producers of the hit TV show
“The Big Bang Theory”. As you may know, they recently developed a spin
off show called “Young Sheldon”. The show focuses on young Sheldon, a
nine-year-old child prodigy, as he attends high school in East Texas.
The show is very heavily science based, as Sheldon becomes a theoretical
physicist at a very young age. The producers and science advisors to the
show, wanted to use fluorescent minerals in one of the classroom
scenes. Since the show takes place in 1989, they wanted to use old
light fixtures with BLB (black light blue) bulbs. I explained the
drawback to that but told them I could provide several high quality,
brightly fluorescent minerals that would fluoresce well under BLB light.
After a long discussion about their options, I sent them about 20
specimens via FedEx overnight. They called 2 days later and said that
the specimens were great, and they were anxious to run some tests with
the film crew. I told them I would be happy to assist the film crew if
they had any questions. Shortly after that, I was notified that the
tests went well, and that they were able to use some, but not all the
specimens I sent.
I was contacted again this week and told that the scene with the
fluorescent minerals was shot and was a success. The episode is now “in
the can” and will air on March 8, 2018. The show is called “Young
Sheldon”, and it can be found on CBS.
If anyone has the technology to capture screen shots from this show, I
would really appreciate it if you could send me some jpegs. I would
love to use a few for my website. I don’t know how long the segment
will be, or exactly how they will present the minerals. However, it
should be fun to see some fluorescent minerals used on a hit TV show.
For those who might be curious about this new show, here is a link to a
trailer.

Hopefully the show will spark some interest in fluorescent minerals.
Hope you all enjoy it!
Sincerely,
rGeorge V. Polman, R.G.
