John:

Recently I bought a UV Tools, Enhanced 11 Watt Shortwave (you can get a longwave bulb for it) for $79.99. It takes 3 D size batteries. I am very impressed with this small field lamp. I had a 6 Watt and was NOT impressed, but the "Enhanced 11 Watt" is excellent. The price is right as well. It is not quite as bright as the big boys but you won't pay the price either. Whatever you get, get the highest wattage you can afford.

The longwave LED flashlights are good, but they have not developed the technology for a shortwave LED bulb yet.

Your opal should be fluorescent under both short (greenish yellow) and long wave (white). Green looks better if trying to sell the product.

Are you planning on coming on the field trip this weekend? If so I can bring my black light for you to play with.

 Hi, All
I just purchased about 100 pounds of hyalite opal on chalcedony from Mexico.  Now I want to put it under a UV light.  So, I am asking for recommendations on what to purchase.  Questions such as:
1.  SW vs. LW?2.  Flashlight size units?3.  Larger units?4.  Battery operated?5.  Price range -- this is important to me.  anything useful at around $200?
Also, does hyalite have any radioactivity?
Thanks
John Scully
