[Rockhounds] (OT) Hurricane Lane

Hawaii is now enduring the largest hurricane -- named Lane -- ever in
recorded history to hit the islands.  Bill and I live on the east side
of the Big Island, so we aren't in the direct path of the center of the
hurricane, but we've had over an inch of rain an hour most of the day
today (Wednesday).  For the next few days Hurricane Lane is predicted to
curve northwest over the west side of the island chain, which means
Honolulu may be directly in its path.

People are preparing for power outages, flocking to stores to buy
supplies, securing things that might blow around, lining up at gas
stations to fill up their cars, and boarding up their windows. Those of
you who have visited us (and their have been several!) know that our
house and property is fairly safe from a hurricane. Unlike many homes in
Hawaii, in case if a power outage, we have gravity-flow water supply, a
propane-gas cooking stove, a fairly large generator with extension cords
to power the refrigerator and several small lights and appliances
(including the computer), and battery night-lights and flashlights in
every room.

The rain has uprooted several plants and bushes around our house so we
will have to protect their bare roots tomorrow with some DIRT, GRAVEL &
ROCKS!

There, that makes this message on topic!

Aloha, Kitty
