[Rockhounds] Why Extraterrestrial Life May Be More Unlikely Than Scientists Thought

I beg to differ.
All the stuff you need to build DNA is out there. Stars flood the cosmos with UV and X-rays that ionizes organic molecules... the resulting radicals eventually react with what's out there clouds...
On earth, if you burn organic matter (plastics, oils, etc...) the most stable end products will remain... dioxines!
If you have reactions in space, the most stable products will also be the most abundant. Those could very well be the proteins that build our DNA.
If that is the case, then life across the cosmos will tend to be rather similar.
Maybe phosphorous needs a specific type of star to be produced in large quantities. No problem, there are plenty stars in the cosmos and plenty types of stars. In the worst case, if P is a real conditio sine qua non for life, life will occur "zoned".
I think that viewing upon life on earth as unique or exceptional, is the daftest thing you can do.
Life is a direct result of the unique quality of carbon: orbital hybridization.
There are other elements that have that quality, like silicon.... but again: survival of the most stable (and most reactive).

Cheers
Axel

All of these articles are GIGO, we know nothing whatsoever about any extraterrestrials, if they even exist. The P argument I assume is based on the use of the phosphates ATP and others in that group and the nucleic acids. But maybe space critters have a totally different biology. We essentially know nothing and everything is what we engineers call a WAG ( Wild A$$ Guess). But publish or perish is the game.
