[Rockhounds] Quartz Owl - Fluorescing ???

Hi JR,
Some Italian geologist have attempted to explain this fluorescence. They did
an extensive article on the subject in the Journal of the FMS a few years
ago. They found quite a few "activators", the usual suspects, so to say.
They failed to explain, in my honest opinion, the immense width of the
emission peak of this fluorescence. Sure, there is some uranyl present and
some rare earths... I'll go with that but I found the main cause still open.
I truly can't say that I know or suspect what causes this yellow
fluorescence. I saw similar and even stronger fluorescent response in quartz
that is associated with andalusite and even a transition of
wollastonite-miserite. Both could be associated with aluminum minerals.
Most quartz fluoresces red due to Fe3+ replacing Si4+.
Really frustrating!
Axel

Axel,
Quartz is a pretty simple mineral, and doesn't often fluoresce at all. What
gives with this quartz that makes it glow = magicx?
or = X-ray bombardment?
or maybe Neutron star collisions?
Something that glows included in the Quartz xtals? But whot? I give up.
