I recall recent research from Oregon State or U of Oregon that extended the future projection to 400,000 years or so instead of 170,000. Taking bets now :)

It's amazing that only British media and a few American scrap sheets have 
picked up on it.   And the articles all seem to have a common and very 
strange and hard to follow visual design.

Another problem with the idea is that Yellowstone has some kind of venting 
system that sometimes works, and noone understand it at all.   In addition 
to catastrophic explosions Yellowstone has many smaller eruptions much more often.  There also seems to be some kind if underground plumbing draining 
the chamber to some extent.   Shutting them off would be more likely to lead 
to catastrophe.
