[Rockhounds] Garnet hill rockhound area (NV)

Our group (Mineral Collectors of Utah) has led a couple of trips out there over the years. You need to know where to go as some places have a decent amount of garnets and some have virtually none. Also, be prepared to work very, very, hard. The rock, a very dense rhylolite tuff, is extremely hard and typically requires a large sludge and often large breaker bar to break up and get the garnets. You can take a large rock with potential and cut it up later, but that gets pretty heavy with no guarantee. Overall, you can get several dozen to about 1/2-3/4 inches in size (a few larger potentially) on matrix. After doing it once and getting a fair amount, it is not on my necessary list anymore.

Tim
I have been there a few times. Some nice collecting if you know where to go. If you do get to go let me know and I will give the GPS and directions to the best area.

Cool! Been on the bucket list of places I will probably never get to! St. Maries ID also has great garnet collecting, been there and need to go back.
